I got a question, that may or may not be answered any time soon, but the RSS feeds you have set up for the cgtalk challenge, how exactly does it work? Usually for most of my feeds I have just clicked a "RSS" button and blamo it gets added to my Google Reader, but I am lost :(
I think my brain lacks intelligence.
By the way, I love how you practically gave away the challenge name in your last GB post. Would have never guessed! ^_^
The RSS feeds are automatically discovered by RSS-enabled browsers (Firefox, Safari, IE7) and some RSS software, due to special HTML markup placed into the page. You can check the online help for your software for clues as to if they support it.
If not, then you have four options.
1) Hope your feed-reader understands web-pages. Apparently some clients (like Google Reader) allow you to add the URL of a web page, and they'll find the RSS link that's built in to it.
2) Use a more modern browser, if at all possible. IE6 is getting long in the tooth! Our primary platform is Firefox 2.0, so that's your best bet for getting every feature we'll develop
3) Look at the source for the page you want a feed on. Many pages (news, forums, challenge, newsletter, stuff on CGPortfolio) have them linked. There will be a <link> tag near the top of the page with a URL in it.
Thank you Mibus! That helped tons! It is great I have set up feeds for not only the view all, but also for the illustration category (which I am in) and for each individual participant that I want to keep an eye on.
jeez whoever thought of RSS feeds is brilliant, and google is brilliant for making such a handy reader.
Apologies for the second message, I would edit my last but I am unable to do that.
An idea, when I put each individual participant on my RSS, all the links lead to the view all page. It would be great if the links would lead to their individual page instead.
Awesome post, I for one am extremely happy about the extended deadline. I have dedicated about 3 to 4 hours a day on this challenge, as I work every day. That gives me approx 250 hours to finish it, excluding weekends. I am dedicated to taking my time on this and I hope it pays off.
Nice EON article by the way.
Also, whenever I click on an image in someones Challenge page it goes to a 404error page.
I'm glad there are so many people with free time! I'm too busy right now to spend even a couple of hours a day on stuff other than work/children/sleep . I look at the huge amount of time the SHIFT guys put in and am just floored.
Thanks for the heads-up on the 404 btw, all sorted.
Good to hear nothing was lost in the down time. By the way, it would be great if there was a comment button/section for each "blog" entry. and I only put quotes around the word blog because I hate the word so much. :P
